This distinctive design is reminiscent of the “19th Century Shingle” style. Located on a bench overlooking a relatively busy street, this uphill lot contained two enormous boulders. The home’s plan is arranged around these features and they become the focal points of the interior. The open floor plan’s unique cross-axial design is further emphasized in the ceiling with the intersection of two vaults detailed with timber trusses. A large stone fireplace symmetrically located in this axis mimics the presence of the exterior boulders into the interior. Upon entering the home one becomes unaware of the busy street and finds only a mountain refuge.
